Poorly Pup Desperate For Operation To Cure Her Red ‘Demon Eyes’

A cuddly puppy given away online is desperate for an operation after being cursed with red demon eyes.

Coco is a six-month old who has been saved by the Shar-Pei Rescue of Great Britain after being offered as a freebie on Facebook.

The tear-producing glands in the poorly pooch’s eyes have become detached, which has caused them to swell up and create shocking red eyes.

As well as ‘cherry eye’, both of Coco’s eyes have ulcers and she needs urgent surgery to allow lubrication and prevent permanent blindness.

Paul Saxton, who runs the Shar-Pei Rescue of Great Britain, said: “This has been going on for months and her eyes have dried out.

“Coco has two ulcers in each eye and may also need entropion at a later date. Her eyes are the worst I have ever seen and it’s because it has been left for too long.

“The vet is going to repair the tear ducts so they can provide the eyes with lubrication.”

Dogs have a third eyelid in the inner corner of the eye, nearest their nose, which acts like a windscreen wiper to distribute tear film over the eye.

It also contains a tear producing gland which is responsible for more than 50 per cent of the eye’s tear production.

In young Shar-Pei puppies the gland can become detached and can be seen ‘popping up’ and appearing as a swelling in the corner of the eye.

Coco is currently being fostered by a volunteer at the Shar-Pei Rescue of Great Britain, and when she has recovered she will be ready for rehoming.

Her operation is likely to cost more than £2,000 and she is not covered by insurance.

The Shar-Pei Rescue of Great Britain is now raising money to fund the life-changing operation and is warning people about the risks of taking on a dog which is being given away over the internet.

Paul added: “Shar-Pei are an expensive breed so there is always a reason why they are being given away for nothing.

“People see an expensive dog and take it on without carrying out an assessment. That’s why we she has ended up with us after having two previous owners in her short life. She’s still only a baby.

“Coco is currently in foster and is living with three children, a number of other dogs and some chickens.

“She’s being assessed and is a wonderful dog. Her skin and coat are great.

“At the moment she looks like a monster. She has the eyes of a demon but she’s a real angel.

“It’s just her eyes that are the issue so when they are sorted someone will be able to adopt a lovely young lady.”

The Shar-Pei is one of the world’s oldest and unusual dog breeds, originating in China.

They nearly became extinct under China’s communist government and it is thought there were as few as 12 left in the world in the early 1970s.
