Dogs are playful in nature. They tend to wander around especially when there’s a big lawn or yard on the property. There should be no problem with this as long as the place is gated or well-secured. However, if the space is openly accessible to anyone or anything, you might want to think again and consider installing a dog fence.

Dog fences offer security and safety to your beloved pet. Even when you’re not around to watch over them, you can be sure that they’re safe from potential dangers, like moving vehicles, burglars, and other animals. The level of safety and protection could even increase if the fence is more durable and of good quality.

How To Create A Safe And Durable Dog Fence

When creating an enclosure for your dog, keep in mind that you’re doing it for safety more than anything else. For that reason, you might want to prioritize durability to ensure that the fence will last longer and won’t easily get damaged the moment your dog tries to jump over it or chew on it.

For a sturdier dog fencing, here are some steps you can take:

1. Pick The Right Material

Not all pet fencing materials are created equally. In choosing the right material, you’ll need to consider factors like the price, maintenance that it’ll require, and how much safety and protection it can provide to your dog. Wood may be a good option if your goal is to keep the fur baby from jumping over the fence. This is because you can make the height as tall as six feet to accommodate larger dogs. However, wood can be quite expensive and harder to maintain, especially if the fence is going to be built outside where it’ll be exposed to changing weather conditions and other elements.

Another popular material is chain links made from heavy metal wires. This material is durable and more long-lasting compared to wood. Other materials to consider are bricks and wire mesh fabric.

2. Decide On The Size

If you have a fairly spacious outdoor area, you can simply create the fence as you wish, regardless of the size. Wide areas are also perfect so you and your dog can have more quality time together. It can also be a space where you can train your dog. But then, if the space is relatively small, you’ll have to make do with what you have so you can still create a happy place for your dog.

What you can do is consider what types of dog fences would be perfect for small areas like yours. Also, another consideration to make is how big or small your dog is, or if you have more than one dog that needs to be accommodated. Wooden fences, like a picket fence, could be ideal in small spaces because they don’t tend to eat a lot of space compared to bricks or stones. Additionally, they can be solid enough without creating gaps or any holes that small dogs may get through.

3. Make Sure It’s High Enough

Aside from the size, you also need to decide on the height of your dog fence. This would balance the size that you’ve selected, especially if your dog is a jumper or a natural escape artist. The height of the fence shouldn’t be something they’ll easily jump over onto, else they’ll end up always roaming and running around.

As mentioned, the recommended height is at least six feet. Unless your dog can jump higher than that, then you may adjust as needed. If you can’t tell how high your pet could jump over, observe them for a while. If there’s a need to make it taller and the fence has already been installed, you can consider topping it with other materials, such as posts or wood.

4. Check Into Dog Fence Kits

If you don’t have the time and skills to build a dog fence on your own, you can also look into other alternatives such as dog fence kits. These kits are ready to be installed and are also available in different types, sizes, and materials. You can check online so you’ll have an idea of the choices that you have.

Conclusion

Providing a safe and durable fence for your pooch is one key step in ensuring their protection and safety. When it comes to your little buddy, you’ll surely want to keep them secure at your own home. Not to mention, the happiness that it can give them when they’re able to go outside and run freely in the space especially allotted for them. You can even build them a small dog house that’s complete with all the cute accessories and amenities so they can enjoy their outdoor time even more.
