And the sizeable following for the Orkney tabby has led to it being affectionately named the Tesco Kirkwall Cat.

Since the island’s only Tesco store opened in 2010, the feline has spent every day having cat naps in the trolleys outside the supermarket.

It is often seen curled up on one of the baby seats.

Passing customers will often pet it on the way past and even feed it treats when it is awake.

There is even a Facebook page set up in the grey cat‘s honour that currently has more than 2,700 likes.

Stuart Thomson, 32, the duty manager at the Kirkwall store, said: “The cat has been coming here since the store first opened and that was quite a few years ago now.

“It usually just hops into one of bucket seats of the baby trolleys and has a snooze. It must be really comfortable in those seats.

“It just sits there in the sun, gets a bit of attention and shelter.

“Every morning the cat shows up and then it will stay there for the whole day, pretty much. Eventually it disappears off home for its tea.

“The customers absolutely love seeing the cat and will feed it every so often, maybe that’s why the cat keeps coming here. I’m sure the owners appreciate that.

“The staff at the store love it as well, we don’t mind it coming here every day.

“I don’t know if the cat being here wins us any more business by being here but we certainly won’t complain.”

It is believed the cat lives in a house nearby the store.
