A family has been left heartbroken after their beloved pet rabbit was slaughtered by callous thugs – who chopped off his EARS and left him to bleed to death.
Devastated Shannon Carter, 23, and her partner Lee Aram, 37, were woken up by their dog Poppy barking at 2am on Saturday (2/1).
But as the couple let out their pooch they were horrified to find giant continental rabbit, Milky, lying dead in a pool of blood in the middle of the garden path.
Sick yobs had broke into the family’s shed to cruelly butcher the 18-month-old pet, before hacking off and stealing his ears and dumping him next to a back door.
Mum-of-six Shannon, of Braunstone, Leics., said: “It was like a horror film.
“Lee and I heard Poppy barking in the early hours and so we went down and let him out.
“But as Lee walked out, there was Milky. He was on the path just outside the door.
“There was blood everywhere but we couldn’t see properly because it was dark.
“I looked around to see if there was any sign of animals, like foxes, but there wasn’t.
“But in the morning we saw they must have broken into the shed and cut her ears off with a knife – it was a clean cut.
“There was nothing else in the shed apart from Milky, so it was just bolted shut and he lived in a dog’s kennel there.
“When the policewoman came round she asked to look at him and said that it’s been done with a sharp object.
“She said it couldn’t have been an animal attack it was too clean and there were no drag marks or fur.
“But then they didn’t steal anything either.”
“They just left his body on the garden path and took his ears.
“I just can’t work out why someone would do this, it’s sickening. I don’t go out much because I look after the kids, and we haven’t annoyed anyone.
“They must be messed up in the head.”
“If they are doing that to animals now it won’t be long until they start moving onto people.”
Shannon has only been able to explain what has happened to her eldest, nine-year-old Scott, but her others aged between 18 months and seven do not know where Milky is.
Lee had to wrap a towel around the animal – which they bought for £80 from a pet shop in July 2014 – and bury him in the garden.
Shannon, who sells Avon cosmetics with her partner, added: “Milky was more than just a rabbit.
“All our friends used to call him the Great Dane because he was more like a dog.
“He’d play with the kids, and the dogs. He’d jump up on the sofa and beg for food.
“The kids were absolutely devastated when I told them he’d gone up to heaven with nanna.”
“Someone must know who’s done this – if their boyfriend or whoever came home covered in blood on Friday night.
“We shut him away at 9pm, so it happened between then and 2am.”
Leicestershire Police said officers had been made aware of the incident and had taken statements, but there was not enough evidence to investigate.
A spokeswoman said: “We have been made aware of the incident and are asking anyone who has any information to contact us or the RSPCA.”
