This footage shows the emotional moment a Cocker Spaniel was rescued by fire crews – after falling 100ft down a MINESHAFT.

Gem, the six-year-old dog, got into trouble while walking with her owners in woodland.

She fell around 30 metres down the vertical tunnel, and nothing could be seen or heard of the spaniel from the top.

Fire crews were called to the scene in Gulworthy, Devon and the rescue teams were eventually able to winch Gem to safety.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: “The dog was located at the base in an alcove and brought up to ground level using an animal rescue bag, where she was reunited with her relieved owner.

“She appeared relatively well despite her fall and was then going to be taken to the vet to get checked over.”

After the rescue on November 9, firefighters issued a warning asking people to be mindful of the dangers of mines.

“Many of these shafts are often poorly protected, some have fencing wire around or the odd sign but many are hidden or overgrown,” a spokesperson said.

“If it happens and your animal falls in or worst someone falls in, please call us immediately do not ever put yourself or others in danger by trying to get them out.

“We have the equipment and the training to carry out many types of rescue as safely as possible.”
