It seemed like the perfect romantic spot for some outdoor passion.
There they were in the middle of the sunny Nevada desert miles from anywhere on the bank of a beautiful natural hot spring.
So Brit Peter Cousins and his girl Dawn, both on a round-the-world road trip, stripped and leapt in for a bit of splash and tickle.
But for Peter, 55, it proved the most terrifying and expensive nookie of his life, costing him £165,000 in medical bills – AND his girlfriend.
Moments after their romp, during a break from their holiday jobs at a remote cowboy ranch, he had a heart attack.
Peter says: “When I got out of the water there were pains in my left arm and I just collapsed.
“We were in the middle of nowhere three hours from the nearest town. We were miles from the ranch and even there you couldn’t get a phone signal. I didn’t know if I was going to make it.”
Dawn ran three miles to get help on the nearest road. She flagged down a truck driver who called an air ambulance on a satellite phone.
Two hours later, Peter was flown to Reno hospital and had a life-saving operation. But after his stay there in April 2013 he almost had another cardiac arrest when he got a bill for $250,000.
He says: “When I woke up after my heart attack I was in A&E. Doctors fitted a stent and gave me lots of drugs to keep me alive.
“I was in there five days. As I was leaving the doctors asked me how I planned to pay the bill. I thought it would be about $5,000. I was gobsmacked when I saw it. Stupidly, I didn’t have travel insurance.”
Unable to pay, artist Peter flew back to the UK for more treatment while Dawn, his girlfriend of two years, stayed on the ranch.
Peter says: “I keep having to go back there to try to work out a solution with the hospital. There’s no way I can pay that amount.
“I’m hoping I can get the debt wiped because if the hospital decide I do have to pay back the full amount, I’ll never be able to go to America again. That will hurt.”
Another thing that hurt Peter was Dawn splitting up with him last October – but they remain friends and, despite everything, he still has fond memories of that day in the desert.
“After we started working at the ranch, Dawn and I took a walk around and discovered these beautiful natural hot springs,” says Peter.
“We always used to sit in them and then one day we thought it would be romantic to make love in the pool. It turned out to be the most expensive sex ever.
“But I have no regrets. Yes, I will never be able to forget I owe so much money, but it was worth it for the sex. It’s always worth it.”
