Rural police officers played out a scene from Hot Fuzz – when they wrestled a runaway SWAN into the back of their car.

The disorientated bird appeared to have taken a wrong turn and ended up getting itself into a bit of a state.

Luckily, Sgt David Nielson was on hand and put his experience of chasing criminals to good use, catching up with the escapee on Friday afternoon.

The kind-hearted rescuer grappled with the swan and cradled it in his arms to calm it down as he sat in the back of a squad car.

It was taken to a safe location and released back into the wild in its hometown of Newquay, Cornwall, later that day.

Insp David Meredith praised his colleague, of Devon and Cornwall Police, in a tongue-in-cheek tweet.

He wrote: “Never a dull moment in #Newquay Sgt David Nielsen with a rescued swan this afternoon. Great work Dave.”

The fiasco echoes a hilarious scene in comedy classic Hot Fuzz, starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, which sees two officers desperately trying to rescue an escaped swan.
