A one-eyed ewe is the most confused sheep in Britain – because it thinks it’s a DOG.
Nelson, who had her eye pecked out by a crow when she was just a little lamb, loves nothing more than HERDING her canine friends in for dinner.
The ewe, named after one-eyed Admiral Lord Nelson, gets on like a house on fire with the Jack Russell, Rottweiler and two border collies – and thinks she’s one of them.
Sam Castle, who runs Cole Farm in Hawkinge, Kent, first noticed the sheep playing with the dogs almost as soon as she brought her into their home, but didn’t think it was anything special until her husband started filming them.
Sam, 30, said: “It’s quite normal for me to see but my partner thought it was hilarious and started filming them.
“I guess I am used to it now because it’s how they’ve always been, but it must look a bit odd.”
Little Nelson was raised as a ‘sock lamb’ after her horrible attack that left her with just one eye.
This means they reared her domestically by hand – and ever since Nelson has never grown out of being a household pet like one of the dogs.
The lucky lamb was discovered just moments from death in a hedgerow by Roxy the Rottweiler after a crow had savagely gouged out one of her eyes.
Sam said: “We were out walking the dogs one morning when Roxy ran over to a hedgerow right at the back of the field and started barking.
“I went over to see what was going on and found this tiny little newborn lamb lying in the hedgerow, probably about half an hour away from death.”
Her mother was nowhere to be seen – so Sam took her back to the house to nurse her back to health.
When Nelson was happy and healthy again, they tried to put her back out with the rest of the sheep – but she wasn’t having any of it.
Sam said: “She just wanted to stay on the yard with the dogs she had befriended and she has been bouncing around with them ever since.
“They really are great friends. When we drive into the yard with the dogs in the car, Nelson is usually bouncing around ready to greet them as they get out.
“It is very sweet to watch them play together, and very funny. I reckon she thinks she’s one of them.”
Sam also runs a series of boot camp fitness classes to prepare potential Tough Mudder participants.
Obstacles on the farm include running through a field while being chased by the dogs – and Nelson.
