A Mannequin Placed At The Side Of The Road To Stop Speeders Has Sparked A Residential Row

Betty the mannequin which is being used to stop speeding in a Gloucestershire village. See SWNS story SWDUMMY; Road safety campaigner Betty stands at the side of the road 24/7 in a bid to persuade drivers to stop speeding through a village on the Gloucestershire borders. Whatever the weather she waits on a bend to urge motorists to slow down and stick to the 30mph speed limit as they pass through Aston Ingham near Newent. But well-dressed Betty doesn’t mind being outside around the clock because she is in fact a dummy standing guard on the B4221 between Kilcot and Lea.

A mannequin placed at the side of the road by a villager to stop speeders has sparked a row – with some claiming the ‘sexy’ dummy is distracting drivers.

Caring Julia Askew, 59, places the life-size doll called ‘Betty Goslow’ on the verge of a country road holding a sign reminding motorists to slow down.

Julia regularly changes the mannequin’s clothes – including a series of racy outfits like short skirt and heels.

Betty’s wardrobe includes mini skirts, tennis gear and low-cut tops and has even been pictured holding a bottle of wine.

But some locals say instead of helping reduce speed the dummy could catch the eye and distract motorists.

Julia, an IT consultant, places Betty in Aston Ingham, Herefordshire, for 24 hours a day with her playful sign urging drivers to stick to the speed limit.

Julia said: ”At first I just put up the sign, but then I thought it would be nice to have a bit of fun with it.

“Initially I dressed her in a high-viz police jacket and I think that worked for a lot of people. But it is possible that these latest outfits get the most attention.

“Where I live is the first bend after the 30mph sign, so people come round here really fast.

“There is no pavement and people are too scared to walk on the road it is that dangerous. They will jump in their car just to drive 50 yards.”

But some locals say they worry the dummy might be a bit of a distraction.

Speaking today, Ian Hodge, 57, said: ”I drive past most days and she always has a different outfit on.

”Her heart is in the right place but you’d have thought if the average bloke sees a sexy woman by the road it might be a bit distracting.”

Another driver added: ”We all want people to slow but i’m not sure a mannequin in a cocktail dress is the answer.”

Julia denies that her roadside model will be a dangerous diversion.

“All the feedback has been very positive. People say it makes them smile but, more importantly, it does make them check their speed.”

Other villagers have given Betty their backing on her Facebook page.

Maureen Osborne wrote: “Living on one of the blind bends of this village I have witnessed and helped in two very nasty accidents, one where a car came off the road and up my wall landing in its side.

“Please SUPPORT Betty before there is a fatal accident in the village. Be aware and help Betty, you never know what she might be wearing – slow down to see!!”

Julia has now joined the parish council and is hoping to get a temporary speed check sign erected on the corner of the road.
