A six-year-old boy who’s cancer battle gripped the nation’s heart is set to leave hospital after he was rushed back in on New Year’s Eve.
Cancer hero Oscar Saxelby-Lee fought a courageous battle with a rare childhood leukaemia and finally began his road to recovery and headed back to school last year.
But sadly Oscar’s parents Olivia Saxelby, 26 and Jamie Lee, 28, announced their “absolute devastation” on New Year’s Eve that the youngster had been rushed back into hospital.
Mum Olivia revealed last week that their “little warrior” was again facing uncertainty after he had been declared cancer-free and returned to school only two months earlier.
But in a post on the Hand in Hand for Oscar Facebook page the family have announced the youngster is set to be allowed home after spending New Year in hospital.
Announcing that little Oscars fevers may be a result of adenovirus – a common virus in children that can infect the airways, lungs and nervous system.
Oliva announced on Saturday evening (02/01) and shared new photos showing Oscar looking in much better spirits compared to the previous day.
She wrote: “I am so sorry I haven’t updated or responded to any of you since our last post.
“The truth is, we all feel like we’ve been hit by a bus! Trying to stay focused, on top of everything and positive is a real challenge at times! You guys know this well!
“Ozzy turned a horrible corner on New Year’s Eve, and we’ve been trying to source the reason ever since!
“We’ve started to put a few pieces together but boy, he’s one heck of a puzzle!
“I’m trying to learn to take a step back (well to some extent) instead of trying to ‘fix’ everything because it helps me see more clearly, and others on that note too!
“I’m always there with my excel sheets, pen and paper, questioning everything in front of us, questioning opinions, trying to get all the facts straight and it sends me on a whole new level of exhaustion!
“It’s like being in an actual dot to dot game, only I’m the pencil!
“The Doctors and Nurses really do need a medal from just simply listening to me!
“But as always we are reminded by each other that we are his advocates and therefore will always try to be the best! The Team in our local hospital have been very good to us these past few days.
“They have located a possible cause for fevers being adenovirus. This could explain a lot of things, but it may not. We just have to watch and wait.
“Oscar has had IV antibiotics and has not had a fever since which is fab! But, with that said, antibiotics wouldn’t necessarily treat adenovirus! Confusing. Also nerve-wracking.
“He is still pale but not so green! He is still tired but appetite improving! Kidneys are damaged, but they have had a very good flush through after being on a drip. We are not sure if there’s something else underlying or if his body has just taken a hit from this virus.
“As for the bloods dropping recently, we hope to get to the bottom of!
“So the plan of action is hopefully to take him home to rest. Keep an eye out for any change in him or deterioration and further tests on Monday.
“We are off to Birmingham Tuesday as well, with the aim to get him on an emergency list for a Bone Marrow aspiration (the dreaded disease testing).
“Our fears that we try so very hard to turn our backs on came a true reality this week.
“We know deep down Ozzy has got this, but sometimes fear takes over! So we are still a little up in the air but very very pleased Ozzy is doing well
“I will keep you all updated as much as I can. Thank you so very much for all the love and support. It really does mean a great deal to us xxxx”
Posting to their Facebook page on New Year’s Eve Olivia wrote: “Unfortunately, this is the way we are entering 2021. We are absolutely devastated.
“Not because of the date or the timing, nor because of how horrid it is to be going into a new year separated, but because our boy doesn’t deserve any more pain.
“He doesn’t deserve to be inside these walls. He doesn’t deserve to be put through the damaging experiences he has to endure.
“He doesn’t deserve to be hooked up to these lines AGAIN! He doesn’t deserve to go through any trauma at all!
“Our hearts are heavy, but they are in no way lost! We will keep fighting for you Ozzy Bear – Forever.
“We have no clear answers yet. We do not know what tomorrow will bring. What we do know is… You WILL come out stronger! And this WILL all be ok!
“Please please keep our little warrior in your hearts.
“Wishing you all a very Happy New Year with a shed load of love and light always. Let’s get you home baby! Come on 2021, please be kind xxxxx”
Oscar was diagnosed with an aggressive T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in December 2018.
With doctors giving the youngster a three-month “life or death” race to find a stem cell match.
His parents then launched a UK-wide appeal for donors which led to a record-breaking 4,855 volunteers queuing in freezing rain at his school to get tested.
But after over 10,000 people were tested a match was finally found in May last year.
However, the turmoil didn’t stop there and his cancer returned a few months later.
After a crowdfunding campaign which raised £600,000 him and his family flew to Singapore for pioneering treatment not available on the NHS.
Making Oscar the second child in the world to undergo ground-breaking CAR-T therapy before having his second bone marrow transplant.
Oscar has now been cancer-free for 11 months following the treatment and flew back to the UK in June last year.
