A couple say they want to have ‘as many kids as possible’ before it’s too late – because they have a 29-year age gap.
Selina Robson, 25, met her now-husband, Steven, 54, in October 2017 and in the three years they’ve been together, they’ve got married in Vegas, had their son Archie, one, and now have another baby on the way.
The couple, from Dumfries, Scotland, ‘clicked instantly’ when they first met at their local pub, where Selina worked behind the bar.
Steven admits he thought he would never have a wife or a family, and was living with his mother when he first met Selina – so is over the moon to have proved himself wrong.
Their families were initially shocked at the vast age difference between them, but have since embraced the relationship as they can see how happy the pair are.
Others are less understanding, and have labelled Selina a ‘gold-digger’ and even suggested she’s too young to be holding hands with her ‘dad’.
But that hasn’t deterred the happy couple, who have vowed to have as many kids as possible before Steven turns 60, as both are only children and would like to have a ‘big family’.
“Sometimes I worry about how Steven will be able to keep up with all the kids, but he’s such a great dad and that’s the most important thing,” Selina said.
“I think we’ll easily be able to have four in that time – but the more the merrier!
“I never expected to fall in love with a man over twice my age – and closer in age to my grandparents – but we’re so happy and neither of us are very traditional, so it just works.”
Selina was working at the local pub when she started chatting to Sunday regular Steven, a car parts delivery driver, in October 2017.
In another relationship at the time, she didn’t see the bond between them as anything more than friendship, but she couldn’t help but laugh at Steven’s jokes.
“He was so funny and really made me laugh every week,” Selina said.
“We just got on really well – I always looked forward to him coming in.
“My boyfriend at the time was actually a couple of years younger than me.
“I didn’t realise until I met Steven that I actually wanted more from my life – so decided to break up with my partner as I knew I wasn’t happy.”
Following the break up, Steven sent Selina flowers, and she realised there might be a romantic spark between them – which Steven confirmed when he saw her next.
He asked her on a date, and just a couple of months later in December 2017, the couple moved in together.
“I’m quite spontaneous so didn’t really overthink any of it,” Selina said.
“I knew he was a lot older than me, but that didn’t change the way I felt.
“Steven laughed me into bed – which is saying something, but he’s a funny guy!”
It wasn’t until after they moved in together that Selina told her grandparents – who brought her up after her mother died when she was 12 – that Steven was in fact 29 years older than her.
“I’d told them about him but they’d never met – so when they did meet on Christmas Day, it was hard not to tell them how old he was because it was fairly obvious he’s quite a bit older than me,” Selina said.
“They were shocked, but got on with him really well which made it easier for them to get their heads around.
“It’s quite funny really, because he’s closer to them in age than he is to me.”
Grandparents Anne, 74, and Jack, 80, welcomed Steven into the family with open arms, and labelled him a ‘gentleman’ – something which Selina found much more attractive about dating an older man.
“He doesn’t play Xbox, he doesn’t watch football – he’s much more mature and knows exactly what he wants in life,” Selina said.
“He never thought he would have a family – so when he met me and we fell in love, he said he knew he had to do something about it if he wanted to be with me.”
Steven proposed on January 3rd 2018, just over a month after the couple had become ‘official’ – and an elated Selina said yes immediately.
“After getting engaged I was eager to fall pregnant because I worried we might not be able to have kids because of Steven’s age,” Selina said.
“I’ve always wanted children, but that really put the pressure on.”
Luckily for them getting pregnant wasn’t a problem, and they found out they were expecting in June 2018.
With a holiday to Las Vegas, USA, already booked for that August, the couple decided they would tie the knot there and celebrate with family when they got home.
Although not that aware of the age gap themselves, that doesn’t mean they don’t receive comments and strange looks from others.
Selina has been called a ‘gold-digger’ and even asked if she’s ‘out with her dad’ when the pair have been on a night out together.
“We enjoy going on bar crawls and I’ve had people come up to me and ask if Steven’s bothering me before, as if he’s giving me unsolicited attention,” Selina said.
“Someone’s even thought I’m on a night out with my dad before – I think that’s weirder than having an older husband!
“You should see their faces when I tell them we’re married.”
Little Archie, one, was born on February 9th 2019.
“I sometimes worry about how it will affect the children having a much older dad,” Selina said.
“When other children might ask them in school ‘what does your dad do’ and he’s retired, that might be tricky for them – but kids are resilient and there’s no definition of what’s normal.
“Some kids like me, grow up without a dad around, and Steven is such a fantastic father so that’s all that really matters.
“As long as kids are loved, they’ll be happy.”
Their newest addition is due in February 2021, and the couple hope to have ‘at least’ two more children by the time Steven reaches his 60th birthday.
Speaking of their relationship, Steven said: “Selina was quite a party go-er and my only worry was if I could keep up with her as I’d had my youth days. But after getting to know each other we’re just as wild as each other.
“People tell me I’m lucky to bag myself a younger woman – which I definitely am – but it doesn’t bother me because if I was with someone my own age I wouldn’t have been able to start a family.
“Meeting Selina and having children has completed my life.”
