For many of us, looking our best is a constant priority throughout the day. However, one of the most efficient ways to maintain healthy skin and hair has less to do with what you do during the day, and more to do with the quality of sleep that you get during the night.

Everyone knows the benefits a good sleep regime can have on your brain function and alertness, but it’s also important to note that quality rest also affects the appearance of your skin.

Here are just some of the benefits eight hours of quality sleep will have on your appearance.

Improving Your Complexion

If you have concerns about your complexion, a lack of sleep could be the culprit. Missing out on quality REM (Rapid Eye Movement) is just one of the causes of poor complexion, as you are limiting the process in which the body regenerates most efficiently.

Drinking alcohol before bed disrupts REM sleep. If you would rather not go overboard with your makeup the morning after, drink with moderation and try to limit your alcohol consumption before bed.

Prevent Dark Circles Under Your Eyes

Not getting the right amount of sleep can lead to the formation of dark blue circles under your eyes. This is because your skin reacts to inadequate rest by dilating your blood vessels, which shows in the form of decolouration under your eye.

If you want to reduce the prominence of these dark circles, try to get a couple more hours of sleep when you can. Concealer can only do so much when your body is sleep-deprived.

Healthy Looking Skin

Sleep is not only a time of rest, but regeneration. During this process, your body will remove any dead skin cells and replace them with new ones. This is how your skin maintains a healthy-looking glow, and skipping on precious sleep will only hinder your body’s ability to carry out this function properly.

Getting the right amount of rest is also important for keeping your skin adequately moisturised. How often you sleep has a direct impact on the pH levels in your skin, which determines how hydrated your body is.

If you aren’t getting a good eight hours’ sleep, it’s likely that you will experience break outs, dry skin, and redness because of a lack of hydration. You should also use a moisturiser just before bed, as this is the time when your skin is most flexible.

Your skin can also be poorly affected by stress brought on by a lack of sleep. This has a negative impact on your capillaries, which disrupts the flow of nutrients to your skin. If you want to avoid your skin from looking dull, make sure you take the time to get a good amount of sleep every night. Your skin will thank you for it.

Keep Your Skin from Aging

When you cut down on sleep, the amount of collagen produced by your body decreases. Collagen is an important protein associated with keeping your skin elasticated and youthful. When your body produces less collagen, signs of aging such as wrinkles and sagging of the skin are more likely to occur.

The quality of sleep you get on a daily basis will have a considerable impact on your body’s production of collagen. If you are concerned about your skin showing signs of aging, your first action should be to evaluate your sleeping pattern.

Sleep can be a big help to your beauty regime as it puts your body in the best possible position to maintain a healthy appearance. When your body is healthy, you won’t have to spend as much time and money on improving the appearance of your skin.

A great way to guarantee a good sleep is to make sure you have a high-quality mattress. If you’re looking for a better mattress, the experts at The Odd Mattress Company are here to offer you great advice on how to find the right one for you.
