A super slimmer lost six stone after being fat-shamed by pictures of her dressed as a roly-poly police officer on a friend’s hen do.
Helen Dennis, 37, ballooned to more than 17 stone after years of gorging on chocolate, takeaways and fizzy pop.
She was known as the “fat friend” with pals until she decided to change her lifestyle following a fancy dress themed night out.
Helen was so shocked at the picture of herself wearing a police uniform she joined Slimming World.
Incredibly, she has now lost a whopping six stone and has remained at her target weight of 10 stone 3lbs for more than five years.
Helen, of Worcester, is now a trim size 10 and is in such good shape she has been forced to buy an entire new wardrobe of clothes.
She said: “I thought of myself as the ‘fat friend’, the person who everyone was happy to be seen with and could be relied on.
“It didn’t bother me at the time until I went to a fancy dress party dressed as a police officer.
“When I looked at the pictures I burst into tears. All my friends were slim and looked great and I was just this fat frump next to them.
“I saw the pictures on Facebook and I was so surprised how bad I looked. I was really unhappy at that time.
“It made me really self-conscious and I hated it when people got cameras out. I just wanted to hide.
“My weight just kept going up while my self-esteem plummeted. I was also in a relationship at the time which ended. I was in a bad way and just turned to comfort food.”
Helen, who works full time as a nanny, says she started piling on the pounds when she was 18 after she was prescribed steroids for a chest infection.
She said: “It wasa gradual thing when I was 18 and it just got harder and harder to keep the weight off.
“I decided I had to do something to change my life so I looked up local weight loss groups and found Slimming World.
“I went along and I learnt how to be more selective in the foods I ate. I cut out dairy products and reduced my portion size.
“Within a few weeks the weight started dropping off and I felt 100 per cent better.
“I joined a gym and started going three times a week. My clothes got baggier and my friends started noticing a real difference in me.
“When I used to meet them I’d drink cappuccinos and milkshakes but now I just had black coffee.
“I also never have cereal and bread on the same day and I’ve virtually given up bread completely.
“Scrambled eggs and beans really fill me up so I don’t miss bread or toast.”
Helen says her new healthy lifestyle has had an impact on her social life.
She said: “The funny thing is I’m now smaller than a lot of my friends.
“I’m so much happier and I’m so glad I’ve kept the weight off for so long. I still watch what I eat and how much but it’s natural for me now.
“I still go out but I don’t drink alcohol, I stick to Diet Coke instead.”
