Jack Jennings in his youth. See SWNS story SWPLveteran. A WW2 veteran, who is the 'last survivor' of the Death Railway has celebrated his 103rd birthday while donning his military medals. Jack Jennings was one of 61,000 Allied prisoners of war forced to build the 258-mile bridge by the Japanese military during WW2. Around of fifth of the Allied labourers died while working between 1942 and 1945. Jack, who is believed to be the last survivor of the so-called Death Railway, marked his birthday on Thursday (Mar 10). Wearing his military uniform, Jack was joined by around 50 friends and family as well as members of the Royal British Legion.
