If you want to know the essential tools you need as an enthusiastic DIY’er, take note of the professional’s toolbox, the next time you have a tradesperson in to do some work.

The tools of the trade are literally that, and your trade professional will only have the tools they can rely on. To help you set yourself up with a DIY toolbox a pro would be proud of, we take a look at the seven tools that contractors swear by.

1. Line laser level

Accurate measurements are key to any DIY or construction job, without them you are running the risk of a botched and potentially costly job. And when it comes to getting things right, a line laser level is a worthwhile investment. For level surfaces, plumbing, correct height and other measurements and even to align objects, the laser level is a wonderful piece of technical kit used by most contractors. And online suppliers such as ADA Fastfix offer a wide selection of line laser levels at affordable DIY’er prices.

2. Utility knife

It may make you feel like a boy scout, but a multi-tasking utility knife is a key tool no contractor will be without. Versatile and easy to pop into your pocket, these retractable knives can be used for a host of jobs, from opening boxes to scoring lino or plasterboard. Opt for a model which has a spare blade holder in the handle, and you will be ready for anything.

3. Oscillating multi-tool

As the ultimate DIY multitasker, an oscillating multi-tool is a great investment that has a whole host of uses. From wood and metal work, to scraping, sawing, sanding and grinding, there’s no end to this multi-tool’s usefulness when it comes to your own DIY. And it helps to keep your toolbox from overflowing with separate power tools.

4. Cordless screwdriver and drill

Another space-saving essential for your tool kit is a cordless screwdriver, which takes the strain out of needing to manually screw plus saves you carrying your whole collection of screwdrivers to every job. And if you opt for a combi device which also incorporates a cordless drill, you can pack a whole lot of convenient screw and drill power for the money.

5. Dust collector

While it may be an investment, a dust collector is one of those tools you will wonder how you ever lived without, especially if you do a lot of plastering, sanding or woodwork. Sucking up debris and air-borne particles created when sawing, drilling or grinding, this nifty piece of kit will help to clear the air and reduce the amount of dust you may breathe in.

6. Ear defenders

With the safe level of noise exposure estimated to be around 85 decibels (that’s the level of busy city traffic at rush hour), it goes without saying that repeated use of power tools can have an impact on your ears. Which is why contractors swear by ear defenders when on site, and so are a wise addition to your protective and safety kit.

7. Claw hammer

Our last must have tool is a simple one, and one that should be in every contractor and DIY enthusiast’s toolbox. A straightforward claw hammer is a classic that does its job, time and time again. And it is versatile too, with a blunt head for effective hammering and a two-prong claw to remove nails or to use as a lever. And this is one essential tool that won’t break the bank!
