A down-to-earth couple described how they tucked into their wedding meal at McDonald’s – just hours before Kate and Wills attended a posh ceremony down the road.
Thrifty Mike Gilbert, 35, and his sweetheart Charlie, 29, tied the knot in a low-key ceremony with close friends and family members.
After exchanging vows the hungry pair decided to divert their car to pick up a Chicken Deluxe meal en route to their reception.
Customers at the McDonald’s branch in Calne, Wilts., watched in amazement as Charlie walked in wearing her full wedding dress and veil.
Meanwhile, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were preparing to attend the wedding of Charlie Budgett and Lucy Meade in nearby Marshfield.
The royals attended the ceremony at St Mary’s Church in March, where Prince William saw his old friend’s sister tie the knot.
Charlie said they didn’t let the royals being in town intimidate them and that they would do the same thing over again if they could.
She said: “It started off as a joke at first – I said that I would be hungry after the ceremony so I would be going to McDonald’s for lunch.
“But then – as I thought – I was really hungry after the ceremony so we went to McDonald’s and got a chicken meal, it was delicious.
“We just surprised the staff by turning up in all of our wedding gear and they brought out the meals for us.
“Afterwards we went to our real reception where the rest of the guests were waiting.
“I wouldn’t change anything we did for the world. We had a lovely day, that’s all that matters.”
The pair met on the online dating site Plenty of Fish in January this year and got to work planning the wedding just eight weeks later.
Charlie, who is currently unable to work, said: “We’d only been together a month before we knew that it was meant to be.
“It was a bit of a joke at first, he called my Mrs Gilbert, but then a few days later he said that he would actually like to marry me.
“We kind of skipped the engagement and went straight to the wedding – we have planned it in less than a month.
“My family despise the idea but they don’t understand it’s love at first sight.”
